Picture this: You, with a paintbrush in one hand, and a cup of cocoa in the other. It’s a chilly winter night, and you’re creating beautiful wonders that would make even Santa himself jealous. Hey there, crafty comrades! Tired of overspending on those name brand Christmas ornaments every year to beautify your tree? This year, get ready to embark on a DIY adventure that is as textured as your favorite cozy Christmas sweater— DIY textured ornaments! From glitter galore to fabric frenzies, in this article, I will guide you through some easy steps, complete with pictures, to create unique textured ornaments that will have you saying, “Did I really make that?” *Spoiler alert: Yes, you did!

So, what’s the deal with textured ornaments anyway? Well, my darlings, they’re like the fashion-forward accessories of the Christmas tree world— they add depth, character, and a touch of glam to your holiday decor. We’re talking about ornaments that don’t just hang; they make a statement. So, grab your paintbrush and hot glue gun, and let’s get started!

Adding a Vintage-Inspired Texture Using Baking Soda

Give your ornaments a touch of old-world charm with distressed finishes and muted tones.

Begin by removing all ornament caps. Place a wood skewer inside the ornament and tape around the neck using painters tape to hold it in place. This will allow the ornament to stand up right and remain untouched while drying.

What You’ll Need:

Clear, plastic ornaments
(Available at Michael’s)
Wood skewers
Painter’s tape
3 Paintbrushes
Acrylic paint
Baking soda
Optional: Rub n Buff
(Available at Michael’s)

Steps (Without Rub n Buff):

Step 1: Use a paintbrush to apply one coat of acrylic paint to paint each ornament and allow it to dry. Choose colors that fit your holiday color scheme.

    • Pro Tip: For a moodier look, choose darker colors like brown or taupe.

Step 2: Add baking soda directly to your paint source and mix until it becomes a paste. Immediately apply an even coat of mixture to each ornament.

Step 3: Allow to dry. Reapply until you achieve the desired vintage look.

Step 4: Replace ornament cap and hang!

Steps (With Rub n Buff):

Step 1: Use a paintbrush to apply a few coats of acrylic paint to each ornament. The goal is to completely saturate the color. To determine if you need another coat, hold your ornament up to the light and see if any light penetrates through. If so, apply another coat.

Step 2: After applying the final coat, immediately sprinkle baking soda over wet paint and allow it to dry.

Step 3: Once dry, brush off the excess baking powder (You can use your hands or a brush). Do this over a garbage can to avoid a mess.

If you are happy with your result, then you’re done! I made a few like this and I’m absolutely obsessed! But if you want to add a little vintage shine✨, continue on to Step 4

Step 4: Using a cloth or a brush, lightly apply Rub N Buff over entire ornament until you achieve desired vintage look

Step 5: Replace ornament cap and hang!

Nature’s Embrace

Get back to your roots with pinecones, twigs, and dried flowers to create an indoor winter wonderland inspired by nature.

What You’ll Need:

Clear, plastic ornaments

Dried florals, twigs, pinecones, etc.

Steps:

Step 1: Remove cap from each ornament

Step 2: Fill with dried florals, twigs, pinecones, etc.

Step 3: Replace ornament caps and hang!

Fabric Frenzy

Dive into a world of velvet, burlap, and satin. Here are some great ways to stitch up some chic wonders that feel as good as they look!

Replace those ugly ornament hooks with beautiful textured ribbon that will bring your tree from sad to fab!

  • Pro Tip: Keep ribbon strands a little longer on the ends for an extra cozy look

Use textured ribbon to simply tie bows sporadically around your tree to give your tree more character

Use your hot glue gun to wrap twine around your ornaments!

  • Pro Tip: Get creative by using different colored twine. Some of your ornaments can even be two-toned!

Glitter Galore

Because there’s no such thing as too much glitter during the holidays— trust us, your tree will thank you for the glam upgrade!✨

What you’ll need:

Clear, plastic ornaments
Wood skewers
Painter’s Tape
One Paintbrush
Paper bowl or plate
Modge Podge
Glitter (color of choice)

Steps:

Step 1: Use your paint brush to apply an even coat of Modge Podge to the entire ornament.

Step 2: Over a bowl or plate, sprinkle glitter onto the ornament. Then shake the excess off.

Step 3: Leave to the side to dry

Step 4: Replace the ornament cap and hang!

Pro Tip: If you don’t want the mess of using glitter, simply replace the glitter with rhinestones or beads! This will give you the same sparkle and shine without the hassle of cleaning afterwards. I recommend having enough beads to be able to completely submerge/dip your ornament to ensure full coverage and adhesion. We call that beaded brilliance!

 Velvety Finish

Even sweeter than those Red Velvet cupcakes— it’s time to bring that little touch of luxury and sophistication to your home and to your holiday in just a few simple steps!

What You’ll Need:

Clear, plastic ornaments
Wood skewers
Painter’s Tape
Two Paintbrushes
One Sponge Brush
Matte paint
Paper bowl or plate
Modge Podge
Flocking powder (color of choice)

Steps:

Step 1: Use your paintbrush to apply a few coats of matte paint to the entire ornament. Choose a paint that is similar in color to the flocking powder you’ll be using. This will help saturate the color and cover any spots where the flocking is too light. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 2: Using a second brush, apply an even coat of Modge Podge to each ornament.

Step 3: While still wet, use your sponge brush to dab (don’t brush!) flocking powder onto the entire ornament. Do this over a paper bowl or plate to prevent waste (& a mess!). Make sure the ornament is completely covered, then put to the side to dry.

Step 4: Once dry, tap off any excess or loose powder.

Step 5: Replace ornament cap and hang!

So there you have it, DIY enthusiasts! Get ready to unleash your inner artist and transform your tree ornaments from ordinary to extraordinary. Keep in mind that DIY textured Christmas ornaments are not just decorations; they are an expression of your personality, style, and love for making things that are uniquely yours! And when your friends and family are gathered around your tree, admiring the beautiful, personalized ornaments you’ve just crafted with your own two hands, remember that the holidays are not just about what is on your Christmas tree, but about the memories you create around it with the people you love!

Happy crafting! And may your holidays be as beautiful as your creations!✨
